4-Days - Durango, Mesa Verde, and Narrow Gauge Railway

September 22nd -25th, 2005

Durango has become a mecca for tourism with the rebirth of the narrow gauge railroad and the popularity of Mesa Verde. Add to that the always impressive San Juan Mountains, covered In gold at this time of year, and you have a wonderful destination only a day’s drive from Denver.

September 22 Our sightseeing adventure gets underway as we head to Kenosha Pass at 10,000 ft. We’ll stop for a hearty lunch in Salida or Poncha Springs. The Collegiate Peaks welcome us to the Saguache (Sawatch) Range. Look for the spectacular waterfall as we descend Wolf Creek Pass. Enjoy dinner on your own in Durango. Overnight Holiday Inn or similar, Durango, CO

Lunch included

September 23 This morning we visit the ancient cliff dwellings at Mesa Verde. A guide boards our bus for an explanation of the early civilizations who abandoned the site. We will enjoy lunch and explore Spruce Tree House and museum. Upon our return to Durango there will be time to explore its quaint downtown. Overnight Holiday Inn or similar, Durango, CO

Breakfast and lunch included

September 24 One of the most scenic train rides in the country is the narrow gauge railroad between Durango and Silverton. Our coach meets us at Silverton to make the drive over the Million Dollar Highway into Ouray. We take time to marvel at nature’s handiwork at Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Monument. The Black Canyon of the Gunnison's unique and spectacular landscape was formed slowly by the action of water and rock scouring down through hard Proterozoic crystalline rock. No other canyon in North America combines the narrow opening, sheer walls, and startling depths offered by the Black Canyon of the Gunnison. Enjoy a group dinner at the Backwoods Inn. Overnight Best Western or similar, Montrose, CO

Breakfast and dinner included

September 25 Another lovely day of sightseeing is in store. Heading north through Redstone and stop in Glenwood Springs at the Hotel Colorado for lunch. After lunch we head east by way of the beautiful Glenwood Canyon and make a quick stop in Vail for a coffee/ice cream break.
